Barber schools focus on training their students how to cut, maintain, and apply styles to males hair. This occupation have less variation and differ from cosmetology because the services rendered are more focused on hair as opposed to general personal appearance.

Students interested in becoming barbers should be comfortable standing for long periods of time, have above average dexterity and hand control, and be conscious of changing fashions and styles as they relate to hair. Barber schools usually require their applicants to hold a high school diploma or GED equivalent, but exceptions can be made depending on both the school and the individual.
