Court reporting schools teach students to create transcripts of just about any kind of conversation that occurs in a public place, but most often it is during a legal proceeding or a speech. Students interested in becoming certified court reporters should be very adaptive to speech and be excellent at typing.

The training to become a court reporter usually takes less than 1 year and is often awarded as a certificate of completion. Becoming highly skilled for some specialized jobs, such as a stenotypist, requires an associate’s degree and can take 2 years to complete.

Training usually occurs in a technical or vocational type of atmosphere, but can also be from a certified community college or four year institution. Many online court reporting schools and distance education opportunities are also available to students with the time constraints of a job or family.
